Chapter Meeting
Where: Medallion Foundation
Tuesday February 22nd, 2011 - 7 PM - Chapter Meeting at the Medallion Foundation
Our February meeting will be at the Medallion Foundation for the second month in a row.
We'll find out about what the Medallion foundation is doing for aviation safety in Alaska. They also have quite a few PC based flight simulators in addition to both a helicopter and Super-Cub simulator.
Where: Medallion Foundation at 5520 Lake Otis Pkwy Suite 104.
We last visited two years ago and had a great time. The Medallion Foundation has the only full motion Super Cub Simulator. The simulator is currently mounted in a trailer that might be parked inside the building. The plan is to alternate it's location between Anchorage and Fairbanks for six months at a time. It's got 3 huge flat panel displays.
They told me that I was on Merrill Field. When I applied power I really couldn't see where I was over the nose. Once I got going, the tail came up. Literally, the tail came up and the nose went down! It is a full motion simulator. At this point I was weaving towards the north east, diagonally away from the runway. It has great terrain, but no buildings. The grass worked ok, and I took off.
Off to my left I could see the Elmendorf runway. What the heck, it's a simulator, and I don't have to talk to the tower or fill out paperwork, so I'm going to land at Elmendorf. I came in high and fast. Slipped my way down and landed long. I hardly ever looked at the instruments.
When you do a ground loop in a full motion simulator, all of a sudden one wing goes high, you see a lot of sky underneath it, and there is no noise, except for the laughter of the audience to the left, right and behind you.
Go to the Medallion Foundation and fly safe.

Chapter Meeting
Where: Northway Mall
Saturday May 21st is International Learn to Fly Day. In honor of that day, Jonathan Fant is kind enough to allow us to display his RV 8 in the atrium on the east end of the Northway Mall.
We could use some help in keeping an eye on the plane. Jonathan is also planning on mounting the wings, so he needs some help positioning the wings so that he can drill for the mounting bolts.
Saturday May 21st - 4 PM Chapter Meeting - Northway Mall
Rather than a regular meeting this month, it'll be kind of like a hangar meeting at the mall.
June 1st 2011 - Wednesday 7:00 PM

The Board meeting will be at Captain Chuck's at the corner of Airport Heights and the Glenn Highway. Captain Chuck's is located in the old Pizza Hut building in the north west corner of the Northway Mall parking lot.
Attended by Bob, Ed, John and Walter.
Meeting Minutes.... Bob has a new Andriod smart phone. Every couple of minutes Bob would say "Hey look at this! This phone is amazing!" Then he'd talk into the phone "Text John Davis". An icon would swirl around and then "Hey John, did you get a text message? No? Really, it worked every other time during the day.".
A couple of minutes later... Bob would say "Hey look at this! This phone is amazing!" Then he'd talk into the phone "Text John Davis". An icon would swirl around and then "Hey John, did you get a text message? No? Really, it worked every other time during the day.".
Repeat every couple of minutes for an hour and ten minutes. We talked about chapter stuff too.

Eagle Enterprises Safety Solutions
Most pilots in town know about Eagle Enterprises Safety Solutions. They recently moved from International Airport Rd to 5849 Old Seward Highway. They're just north of Dowling in a big green building.
Bob Edison talked to them a couple of weeks ago, and they were kind enough to donate something for a door prize for our meetings. I was thinking a signal mirror, a whistle, a magnesium fire starter, something like that. They surprised us by donating a $60 packaged survival kit!
The next time you are in there, mention that you are a member of EAA Chapter 42, and thank them for their support.
At the latest Board Meeting, we held the drawing for the door prize for anyone who helped out at the Northway Mall. I thought that Jonathan Fant should get the door prize for letting us move his RV-8 project to the mall for the weekend, but Bob Edison thought that we should stick to what we had announced as the rules for the door prize. He had a good point about changing the rules in the middle, so we picked a name at random.
As it turned out, my name came up for the prize, and I think that it should go to Jonathan Fant, so that's what we're doing. Congratulations and thanks to Jonathan.

Chapter Meeting / Picnic / Potluck
Where: Javier De La Vega Park
I've been checking as many soccer schedules as I can locate and I haven't seen anything scheduled at the Javier De La Vega Park for Tuesday, June 28th. I am proposing that we have the June meeting there. I checked with Anchorage Parks & Recreation and it is okay to bring a grill and do the BBQ thing there.
If there's no soccer going on, there will be entertainment in the form of Control Line model aircraft flying before and/or after the meeting.
Javier De La Vega Park is located south west of Minnesota Blvd and International Airport Rd. Head toward the huge Diamond Parking, then take the frontage road east between the parking lot and International Airport Rd. The road takes a right, then a left and the park off to your right. Ball fields, soccer fields and lots of parking.
Gary at Eagle Safety Solutions has again donated an SOS Survival Kit (value=$60.00) to our chapter for the free meeting raffle. All paid-up members who attend are eligible to win it. Please visit Eagle Safety Solutions whenever you're shopping for emergency equipment...and don't forget to thank them for their donations.
Tim Coalwell was the winner of the Survival Kit.
Looking for a volunteer to bring a propane-type grill to the meeting. ( Thanks Lars!) I volunteer to bring propane and some hamburger patties and buns. Please email me if you can help out.
It's a potluck, bring some food, a spouse, a friend...
Hope to see a bunch of you at the meeting!
Bob

Airmen\'s Memorial Dedication
Soon after the tragic C-123 aircraft crash last year in Denali Park that killed Pilot “Wild Bill” Michel, Co-pilot John Eshleman, and Paul Quartly, the wives and many friends of these three Alaskans decided to design and construct an Alaska Airmen’s Memorial in their honor and memory; and to also provide a place so that others may also remember and honor the aviator loved ones in their lives. Through out this past year the group behind this Memorial has made great progress in designing it, and beginning the construction.
The Memorial will be located at Wolf Lake Airport in the Mat-Su Valley. It will be located behind the Wolf Lake Texaco fuel station near the tie downs with immediate access from both Beechcraft Road and the runway. The Memorial will be an outdoor rock garden in the shape of an airplane with a paved and landscaped pathway. It is designed to be open year around for public visitation, with many areas for individuals to purchase plaques to honor their loved ones.
A dedication of the Memorial is planned for Sunday, July 31st at 2:00 pm at the site, followed by the annual Wolf Lake Airport picnic at Steppers Construction. This dedication and picnic will also include an aircraft fly-by and static display.
Although the concept for this Memorial was first envisioned by the wives of these aviators, it is their hope that this will be an enduring memorial to the brave and adventurous aviators from across this great state.

Chapter 42 Members,
Attention Metal Project Builders!
Directions to M&M Aviation
Headed northbound on the Glenn Highway get off at North Birchwood Loop. At the stop sign at the top of the off ramp take a left down Birchwood Loop and follow it beyond South Birchwood Loop intersection, beyond the railroad tracks, go around the north end of the airport on Birchwood Spur Rd., past the DOT/Fire Station, past the shooting range to the Birchwood Airport Pilot Briefing shack on the west side of the airport.
At this point you are on the airport and will need to drive past the CAP hangar and follow the hangar rows to the last hangar on your right (the blue hangar) before the T-hangars on the southwest ramp. Look for the EAA Chapter 42 meeting signs and park in front of the hangar.
It usually takes me 45 minutes to get to Birchwood from Dimond Blvd in south Anchorage so plan using plenty of time for the 25 mile trek north.
There are no signs or visible numbers to use so ask questions of others once at the airport, or call Rob Stapleton at 907-230-9425.

Xmas Plane
This my 5th homebuilt project. It is a plans-built project which kept the cost quite a bit lower than my other projects. The empty weight is 5 lbs and the max gross is 50 lbs making it a true marvel of aeronautical engineering science. So far I have rejected all requests from Boeing, Lockheed, NASA, and others for the secrets of the laminar flow wing. The engine is 1 GP (girl power) which has been in development and training for 19 months. This engine is another engineering marvel with endless amounts of renewable energy. It is safe for the environment with the small exception of certain noxious deposits in the collection covers on the exhaust ports. Since this plane is a true ultra-light no license is required. Hopefully nobody from the Muni will see this and try to charge me an aircraft tax.
The first flight is scheduled for December 25th weather permitting. The test area for Phase 1 is covers my whole house and yard. This project is intended as an alternative to the Young Eagles program to get the little ones interested in aviation.
