Chapter Meeting - The Feb 28th meeting will be at Birchwood Airport to see Dave Baldwin's Kitfox.

This plane is factory built with a glass panel, ADB-S, AOA indicator, BRS, and Bushwheels among other things.

Dave's hangar is just south of Airframes Alaska on the west side of the field. His hangar is #2.

This month we will visit Bill Compton’s hangar at Birchwood and see his Glasair III project. We will get to hear about his plans to fly this to Hawaii as he has done numerous times in his Bonanza. A photo of Bill's hangar location is here.

Cliff Belleau and Tom Lawhorn will provide a tour of the Airglas facility and give some demonstrations of metal forming using shop fabricated forming dies and a hydraulic press.

June 2-4, 2017 Staging and Camping at Iverson Farm "Fireweed Strip" (0AK8), McCarthy, Alaska. Join RAF Alaska State Liaison, Al Clayton, for a weekend of camping, relaxing, flying and a little work!

Overnight camping and potluck picnic evenings of Friday June 2 and Saturday June 3 at Iverson Farm "Fireweed Strip" (0AK8). Bring your tents, camping equipment and food to share. Amenities at Iverson Farm include; 100 LL, Jet A, firepit, BBQ grills, cooking equipment, propane burners, picnic tables, hot and cold running water and an outhouse.

Saturday June 3rd from 9 am to 4 pm will be the work party at Jakes Bar (AKO), shuttle with suitable aircraft only from Iverson Farm for day trip and brushing/surface maintenance at Jake's Bar elevation 1074', 1000 foot poor gravel (no trikes); bring work clothes and limb nippers.

The Birchwood Airport Association will have their annual BBQ on Saturday, June 10th 11:30-2 at the pilot's shack. Family members and kids big and small are welcome.

Burgers, hot dogs, chips, and side will be provided. Please bring a side or a dessert to share and of course a story about your latest adventure. Otherwise, a donation to keep up with the cleaning supplies and drinks that are provided throughout the year would be greatly appreciated.

The Alaska Aviation Museum is hosting an aviation themed summer camp next week and still has slots available. This is an excellent opportunity to get young kids interested in aviation. The camp is for kids in grades 6 - 12 and costs $200. Chapter 42 is supporting the camp by giving Young Eagles Rides next week. If you know of any kids who would be interested please pass the info on to them. The following is some info on the camp and the costs.

We are fortunate to be partnering with the FAA on the camp, they will be conductive interactive learning modules on Control & Approach, Science of Flight, Crash Scene Investigation, and conducting an Aviation Artifact Lab with Museum personnel. The camp includes an onsite visit of NOAA/Weather Tower, a hands on tour of the Museum, a "Fly Your Ride" competition and time on our flight simulators and the Young Eagles flights on the 15th with the 16th as a weather backup, thanks to Bernie Willis and Ed White. Rick Henry plans to have his Navajo there for preflight / walk-around and cockpit familiarization briefings for the kids.

The camp is geared for middle school age kids and is a very affordable camp with great value and plenty of inspiration for aspiring aviators or youth interested in the many other aspects of aviation. The modules of the camp incorporate STEM as well as the history of Alaska through aviation and even includes exploring aviation through art.

This November EAA Chapter 42 will be electing new officers for the following positions for a two year term:

Secretary and
Treasurer

A Nominating Committee has been appointed consisting of Tim Coalwell, Lars Gleitsmann and Rick Henry. The committee has canvassed the current officers to see if they wish to run again for either their current position or another officer position. Anyone that is a current member is encouraged to express their interest to the committee and request to be nominated. The Bylaws relating to elections are here.

Bernie has specifically suggested that we encourage others to step up and request to be nominated for these officer positions to “keep things fresh, get new blood, new ideas, etc.” PLEASE help us keep a lively Chapter by adding your participation. Our Chapter is only as good as its members and only as active as its membership. If you, or another member you know would like to step up, or are even considering stepping up for a position, please either email or call us.

Cliff and Chuck will demonstrate engine inspection procedures of a Condition Inspection on an aircraft engine, including the compression test and borescope techniques. They will discuss the Teledyne Continental Service Bulletin SB03-3 and how to use a Master Orifice differential compression tester.

This is a modern state of the art facility that turns your normal concepts upside down. This is an aircraft painting facility, but there isn't a paint booth! The whole hangar is the painting area.

This month we will meet at the Alaska Air Museum at Lake Hood. Scott Wasmer with Precision Aerotech LLC will be the presenter. He will talk about radio/audio panel installations and common mistakes and will answer questions about electrical issues in homebuilts.

Our November meeting will be held at the Medallion Foundation at 1520 N Post Road.

The Medallion Foundation's Aviation Training Devices and Simulators provide student pilots and certificated pilots the opportunity to practice scenario-based training, emergencies, off-airport operations and other flight operations BEFORE stepping into a cockpit.

During the November meeting Medallion staff will provide an overview of their programs and simulators and will allow us to try out some of the simulators. The sims can be configured for different AC types and models so the same sim could be SE, ME, recip, or turbine just by changing throttle quadrants. The sims can be used for IFR practice or VFR terrain procedures in variable wx conditions. A big benefit is flying the mountain routes/passes in your type AC for terrain familiarization. Or you could let your imagination go wild. How cool would it be to fly Merrill Pass in a P-51 or TBM Avenger.

Come to the meeting and give it a try.
