I used to think that a jig was something that you used with or on a tool. I thought that pretty much any tool used with an aircraft could fit in the back of a full-size pickup truck. I thought that a jig would fit in the back of a pickup truck, if not in the cab of the truck. Every CNC machine took up at least 6 feet by 10 feet of floor space, and the mill was at least 10 feet high in the middle.

It was impressive to see the investment that Airframes Alaska put into their shop, from the equipment to people, training, floor space and dedication to quality.

Where: Anchorage Air Route Traffic Control Center

For our May monthly meeting we will visit the Anchorage Center but it will be limited to 20 visitors (US citizens only) which must be provided by May 15th. Contact Ed White (907) 230-6332 to get put on the list.

You should arrive 15 minutes before the tour time at 700 North Boniface Parkway (the Center is located prior to the Elmendorf gate on the left side of the road if traveling northbound). Park in the visitor parking lot away from the security gate and proceed to the security gate for processing. While security will be pre-coordinated, all visitors will need to show a government-issued ID which will be compared with the list provided by Ed and will be scanned prior to entering the facility. One of the staff will meet you at the gate and escort you into the facility. Expect a 30 minute intro presentation prior to your tour. No cell phones or photography will be allowed on the actual Operations Control Room. Additionally, no weapons, knives or firearms are allowed on government property.

Fly-in information: Bernie's airstrip is "AK45", which depicts on ForeFlight but not on the sectional. The strip is 06-24, 2,200' x 50' turf. This is only 2 miles SW of Wasilla (PAWS), so watch for traffic in their pattern. If your airplane would require landing at Wasilla, call Bernie at: (907) 301-2666 and he will have someone pick you up there.

Arctic Thunder Airshow at JBER returns in 2018 June 30 - July 1 featuring the USAF Thunderbirds. Hours are 8:30 AM to 5 PM.

We will be meeting the local CAF at the Merrill Field "Wings of Freedom Hangar" and will be looking at a NA AT-6, a Canadian Harvard and a Vultee BT-13 Valiant, as well as the Stinson L-13 (Developed when Stinson was a subsidiary of Consolidated Vultee, but mass produced by Convair!) We will start the meeting by parking in the public parking lot of the "Wings of Freedom Hangar" on Reeve Circle, opposite from Reeve Airmotive. Enter the Hangar on the North Side, man-door. Stolp Starduster Too For Sale
Cliff and Bernie have seen it and offer the following observations: It has apparently been inoperative for nearly 40 years based upon the tach time of 7.49 hr.and the build date of 1978 on the data tag, but it could be a new tach with only that time on it. There are no log books and the registration has been cancelled. The engine is a Lycoming O-360 narrow deck of 160 hp. It has a pressure carb for inverted flight as well as an inverted oil system. Engine time and condition are unknown. There is no charging system. The prop shows some corrosion. The fabric is Ceconite and appears sound but the wings have irregularities in their trailing edges. There is some damage to the right front of the center section.
