Help needed delivering supplies to Emmonak Women's Shelter
We are asking for your consideration to help us make future deliveries to this shelter.
About the ZONTA Club of Anchorage (ZONTA Yellow Rose Foundation)
Each woman has her own story. She may be looking to further her education, she may be trapped in a cycle of abuse; she may need a new start... Whatever her circumstances, for over 51 years, Zonta Club of Anchorage has been helping non-profits in Anchorage and around the world provide needed services to women and girls of all incomes and backgrounds. With each life we touch, multiple lives are improved. We are part of a worldwide organization working together to advance the status of women through service, advocacy, leadership and fellowship.
The Zonta Club of Anchorage is proud to be a part of helping this women’s shelter. We have made one delivery (50 boxes) of much needed and appreciated donations to the shelter.
Through our Yellow Rose Foundation, any monetary donation is tax deductable. This would include any cost you would incur for gas used to transport another shipment to the shelter.
About the shelter: Emmonak Women’s Shelter
Mission Statement:
The program was founded for the purpose of providing emergency shelter and assistance to victims of domestic violence and abuse. The board and staff serve to enable alternatives to physically dangerous situations and to encourage self-reliance, and sense of personal worth and dignity. We are committed to developing culturally relevant prevention education and counseling for villages and Emmonak residents that we serve. We are further committed to the recruitment, hiring, and training of local and Yupik speaking persons to all aspects of the shelter operations.
Thank You,

Air Age Cartography
Where: Anchorage Museum Auditorium
Terrence Cole, Professor of History, University of Alaska Fairbanks
Air Age Cartography: How Aviation and the Second World War Put Alaska at the Center of the World
Rapid advances in civil and military aviation in the 1930s and the rise of air power spawned a wave of articles, books and maps calling for development of an entirely new discipline of education for the "air age." For a short time this torrent of cartographic reform caused a fundamental reordering of popular American cartography based on the supposed superiority of polar projections, such as the one displayed on the flag of the United Nations. Nevertheless this educational campaign by government officials, cartographers, airlines, ad agencies and schools portraying the world as a sphere, not a flat rectangle, never broke the hold of the Mercator or other east-west projections on the public mind. As a result the prevailing image of Alaska is generally at the far edge of the earth--if not in a box below California--but once there was a time, albeit briefly, when it was the center of the world.

Chapter Meeting
Where: Airglas, Inc. - 3500 O'Malley Rd
Tom Lawhorn and Cliff Bealleau will be giving a presentation at the Airglas factory at 3500 O'Malley Road.
Tom Lawhorn gave us the basic steps that he uses to create a cargo pod for a PA-18 using vacuum bagging. The mold has already been prepared. It has been cleaned and the fabric has been laid out dry. Over the fabric is a mesh that allows the resin to flow over the fabric. The vacuum bag has been put in place and sealed at the top edge. The inlet for the resin is located inside the pod at the bottom center. The vacuum hose is attached at one of the upper edges. Tom already had the whole set up tested before we arrived.
In the background you can see what almost looks like an old fashioned steam radiator. Those are some of the C clamps that they used to use to clamp the molds.
Measure the resin.
Add the proper amount of accellerant.
Put the inlet hose into the mixed resin and turn on the vacuum pump.
The resin is being pushed up the hose and into the mold by room air pressure into the lower pressure area in the mold.
It spreads out evenly, which looks weird. You'd think that gravity would be more an issue. It almost looks like a blob from a cheap science fiction movie.
The green mesh is what allows the resin to quickly spread. The resin barely oozes through the fabric, but it can flow through the mesh. There is extra vacuum bagging plastic that you can see folded up inside the mold. It isn't a problem because the room air pressure closes it up completely, and no resin gets inside the folds.
When the resin has filled the mold, the inlet hose is clamped off. The vacuum pump is left on.
Tom mentioned the pressure in millimeters of mercury, but my mind doesn't operate in millimeters of mercury.
After the meeting, I did some back of the envelope calculations to try to understand what I was seeing. The vacuum pressure was about 80% of normal air pressure. That rounds out to about 10 pounds per square inch.
I figured that the cargo pod is about six feet by three feet (A foot deep by a foot wide, or 10 inches deep by 16 inches wide).
72 times 36 = 2,592 square inches
2,592 square inches times 10 pounds per square inch gives a clamping pressure of 25,920 pounds. Wow, that is a big number. How much is that in human terms?
One of the methods for proving the strength of a wing is to stack sand bags on it as a static test.
A 60 pound Tube Sand container is 33 by 11 by 5 inches according to one of the big box web sites. That's 60 pounds over 363 square inches, for a pressure of 0.165 pounds per square inch.
So it will take a 30 inch high stack of six 60 pound sacks of sand to exert one pound per square inch of clamping pressure.
That works out to a stack of 60 sandbags 25 feet high to equal the 10 pounds per square inch pressure provided by the vacuum pump.
So how many 60 pound sand bags are there in 25,920 pounds? 432 bags
In the foreground you can see the foam core composed of two different densities and flexibility. Dense in the middle where the attachment points are, and flexible on the ends.
On the wall in the background are the Pavehawk, Apache and Chinook helicopters outfitted with AirGlas skis.

Arctic Flight illustrates the state's early aviation history through artifacts including wreckage from the Will Rogers/Wiley Post crash of 1935, a military-issued electric flight jacket from World War II, and the exhibition's centerpiece, a 1920s Stearman C2B biplane.
This exhibition demonstrates how, in just 100 years, airplanes have evolved from frivolous spectacle to crucial part of the Alaska way of life.

After the public gathering at the Museum, we will have a Chapter BBQ at Sara Maurer's hangar just across the road from the Alaska Airmen's Building. Since we have use of the hangar, it will still be fun and dry, even if it's raining.
We need volunteers to help out with all kinds of stuff, on days before the event and the day of the event too. We are inviting all EAA members from all over Alaska to join us. If you have a spare bedroom for someone travelling into town, please let us know.
Call Ed White at 230-6332 and let him know that you can help.
Jeff brought us up to speed on what has been going on at the EAA. He had some goodies to give away and then answered questions.
He then asked if there was anything else that we wanted him to talk about. We were still trying to digest all the information he had just fed us. We couldn't think of anything else.
He asked again. Would you like to hear about that landing on the Hudson River? Oh yeah, that would be interesting.
Jeff is quite entertaining and has a great sense of humor. The first item on the post-crash emergency checklist is to set the parking brake. Since they were in the river and never put the gear down, that was something he could skip. The next item was to shut down the engines. They had shut down previously. Both were underwater and one had departed the airframe. Another quick item to check off.
Fortunately there was a ferry that pulled up next to the plane within minutes of the crash. Jeff said that they threw a landing net over the side of the ferry for everyone to climb up to the deck. After being in a multi-million dollar jet, his first thought was "What the heck is this? Are we storming the beach in World War 2?".
Some of the food at the hangar.
