Merrill Field Master Plan Update
Latest news for the Merrill Field Master Plan
January 26th 2014 - Sunday 10:47 PM
Hello from Manila Y'all!
Seems like my retirement is simply a license to work more than I did before. Really can't complain, though...there are worse jobs.
I will be flying the amphib Caravan for Huma Island Resort until April. Although it is a very enjoyable job, I really can't wait to be back home in Alaska with Laurel (and Chapter 42).
I want to thank Chuck Hosack for the job he's doing. One can easily lay back and have the chapter just roll along but he has taken the bull by the horns and, from what I can see from a few miles away, is doing a great job.
The Caravan will be down for a while to be re-registered with a Philippine number. After that we will have to abide by Philippine Air Regulations. This means it will no longer be a single pilot airplane as Caravans in this country are required to have a first officer. I will be training a local pilot in our Cessna 206 starting Tuesday. I am working on getting him up to speed to take my place when I leave in April. I will also be training a relatively low time pilot to be his first officer.
Please email when you have the chance...love to hear how everyone's doing.
Best to all, Bob

I will be talking about flying on the Iditarod trail in the early days of the race when I used to cover it using a Cessna 180 on wheel skis with a friend as PIC and some of the antics on the trail among the pilots.

Where: Tanalian Aviation Hanger – 2600 5th Ave
Hi Folks,
Tanalian Aviation is having an Open House at their hanger, and they all thought it would be a great idea to invite the EAA42 crowd to join us.
Hopefully we could get a number of EAA airplanes on hand for static display and maybe even a few fly bys. We will have our helicopters there and will have some other aviation folks joining us. I will have my Eagle there and hope to be able to convince Dan to have his Bearhawk and Bob to have his RV (if he is back). But would love to have others also.
Here is the info on the Open House:
Saturday, April 26th - Starts at 10 am
Tanalian Aviation Hanger – 2600 5th Ave. (West of Stoddards – big brown hanger)
We will also be cooking hot dogs if you want to bring your “cooking machine” over. You can also set up a display and membership booth in our office or hanger. It might be a fun day of Merrill Field aviation.
As the time gets closer I will find out how many folks might bring their planes by.
I am also going to invite the Kenai Peninsula crowd.

Board Meeting
Where: Las Margaritas on Dimond Blvd
There was not a Board Meeting on July 2nd. Chuck Hosack, Walter Yankauskas and Lars Gleitsman were the only people to show up. There were two large groups taking up all of the staff's attention. After half an hour we never had the chance to even order, so we left.
We are meeting at Las Margaritas on the North side of Dimond Blvd between C Street and Arctic Blvd. When you go in, hang a left to the front room that is separated from the main dining area.
From John Davis: I am leaving on a rafting trip for 6 days on Tuesday. I ran by the bank today and the chapters balance is $5707.89 with petty cash at $120.23. The only other item of note is that I have registered the trailer in the Chapters name and it has permanent registration. The address I used was my home address and that is the same as what we use for our banking details.
Bob Edison is weathered in at Denali and won't be able to attend the meeting.
According to the by-laws, we should be thinking about putting together a Nominating Comittee for new chapter officers. We need some people to volunteer for President and Vice-President. Bob Edison feels bad about how many meetings he has had to miss because he was working out of town or outside the country. Chuck Hosack did a great job filling in for Bob Edison, but he has been more than busy studying for his A&P full time at the UAA Aviation Center on Merrill Field.
Last month we did not conduct and official Board Meeting because there was not enough people for a quorum.
Do we have a volunteer to show up at Kava's for the breakfast meeting or should we cancel the announcement?
Coming up in July: Board meeting, Breakfast Get-Together, Alaska Aviation Museum - Sun Jul 20 Salmon Bake & Fly-By, Chapter Meeting, Arctic Thunder Air Show, Airventure.
One last announcement, the webmaster has a bunch of stuff for sale: Zenith 701 Kit, Sporty's Flight Gear Flight Bag, Sigtronics SPO-22 2 place Intercom, Telex Headphones, Bendix King KX 99 Handheld, and a Piper Tri-Pacer. EAA 42 For Sale

Searey amphib flying
Today I was awarded an unusual treat and an exciting experience. Mr. Chuck Hosack gave me a ride in his Searey amphib and the ride was incomparable to anything I have ever done before. The Searey is an exceptional aircraft and Chuck’s attention to detail and all of the extras he has put into the airplane show through in many ways.
On our take off from Wolf Lake the Searey was in the air in a short amount of time and climbing at 500 fpm easily, we leveled out at 1,000 feet and Chuck turned the controls over to me. The Searey is a docile aircraft with solid controls and handled the light turbulence we had with no trouble.
Chuck asked me if I wanted to try a water landing. “Does a fish swim?” Of course I wanted to splash down in the nearest lake, heck I wanted to splash down in all of the lakes. Chuck picked a lake with not much boat traffic, hard to do on the 4th weekend, lined up for landing and touched down in a gentle spray, (ok he bounced it a little, it was a glassy water landing) and when he slowed to a taxi, I opened the window and casually put my hand in the water and joked that it was too cold for swimming.
The take-off on the water was exhilarating, the Searey was up on step in seconds and then Chuck had to maneuver around a canoe and then around an island, all the while the Searey was acting like a very fast boat, then we were In the air. The acceleration once again was amazing, this flying boat really moves.
I wanted to share this with the chapter and thank Mr. Chuck Hosack publicly for making my day.
Thank you Chuck for an experience I will cherish.

Chapter Meeting
Where: Alaska Aviation Museum - Lake Hood
The chapter meeting will be Tuesday, August 26, 7pm at the Aviation Museum. Besides the regular meeting space we will have access to tour the Merrill Field tower cap which will have it's public grand opening on Sept 15 at the museum.
We will have a series of presenters who have a vast knowledge aviation. These surprise presenters are the chapters most valuable resource and that resource is you, the members. After the tower cap tour we will have a good old fashioned hangar flying session. All are welcomed and encouraged but not required to participate.
I would like each member to participate with one or more of the following items:
- Stories of flying, fishing, or hunting this summer. Embellishment highly encouraged and truthfulness can be ignored to make a good story.
- An aviation service beneficial to builders that others might not be aware of.
- A unique tool that may not be widely known that is helpful to homebuilders.
This is the more mature version of "show and tell" so dust out the dark corners of your gray matter and share some of your trade secrets or favorite spots.
See you all on Tuesday. Chuck Hosack

Chapter Meeting
Where: Alaska Airframes/Alaska Bushwheels at Birchwood Airport
The September chapter meeting will be held at the Alaska Airframes/Alaska Bushwheels facility at Birchwood Airport. NOTE: The Meeting time has been changed to 6:30pm. That facility is on the west side of the airport almost across the road from the entrance to the shooting range. FAA FAAST team members will give a presentation on light sport and EAB issues. We will also have an opportunity to tour the facilities there.
This program is open to all pilots and mechanics and is parts of the wings program. You will be able to get Wings credit if you participate in that program. If you are in the Wings program it would be a good idea to pre-register on-line. Since the FAAST team is running the program and the program is open to all, we will probably not do our regular meeting format. We will just go with the flow and mingle with the crowd. This will be a good chance to educate our fellow pilots about our organization and do a little recruiting.
See you on Tuesday.

Ariel Talen-Keller's father, Timothy Talen is going to be inducted into the EAA Sport Aviation Hall of Fame. The following is from the October 2014 issue of Sport Aviation (with the polished Electra on the cover), page 119.
VINTAGE: TIMOTHY TALEN, EAA 8615
TIMOTHY TALEN, founder of the Oregon Antique & Classic Air craft Club and founding director of the Oregon Aviation Historical Society, is an aircraft restoration master. In addition to many partial restorations, Timothy has fully restored at least 20 airplanes, including seven Interstates, a Cessna 120, two Cubs, a 1932 Fairchild 22, and many more. His award winning restorations have graced many covers of EAA's Vintage Airplane magazine, and he has an uncanny ability to look at any antique part and name the aircraft it came from. Tim's father taught him to fly in an Aeronca Champ, and Tim earned his private pilot certificate in 1969. Since then, Tim has earned instrument, commercial, multiengine, and CFl ratings and certificates, as well as an A&P certificate. He served as an air traffic controller in Vietnam, and taught aircraft construction and technology at Lane Community College for five years, during which time his classes built a replica of Les Long's Longster.

The Hangar is located at 4261 Floatplane Dr #6. For the GPS challenged, Floatplane Dr is near the West end of the Lake Hood airstrip, The end with the big Aero Fuel gas tank and Porta-Potty near the road. Drive out to the end of Floatplane Dr. To the left is a set of hangars. The one on the left is roughly "L" shaped and hangar #6 is located at the inside corner.
