We want to thank life-long Alaskan Kirk Ellis who opened his hangar at Birchwood for a tour by the Chapter on 2/22/2022. Kirk builds 4 place super cubs and built Al Clayton's experimental cub. Kirk is a wealth of aviation knowledge and a wonderful person to talk to. Thank you Kirk!!

At our April meeting we will to hold elections for Chapter Officers and Cliff Belleau will demonstrate several practical maintenance procedures such as magneto timing, how to perform a compression test and clarify the differences between these procedures on Lycoming and Continental engines.

Sara's hangar is at 4261 Floatplane Drive - at the south end of the Commercial finger - just east of the Alaska Airmen's Association headquarters.

Construction has started at the Lake Hood Strip (2022-05-04) aopa.org - lake-hood-strip-closure-and-workaround For about three weeks starting on May 2, the gravel runway at Lake Hood will be closed for a major rehabilitation project. This project will include removing and replacing a foot of gravel and will also make improvements to electrical systems and drainage on the airport.

Today our former Chapter President Bernie Willis received his Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the FAA along with another recipient - Al Crane.

The Chapter’s Annual Summer Solstice Young Eagles Rally will occur on Tuesday, June 21st at the CAP Building, Birchwood Airport. Tracey Hupe will be compiling a list of selected kids. Ed is planning for the Chapter to provide BBQ for the event.
Setup is at 9:00, the rally begins at 10:00.

Our EAA Chapter 42 from Anchorage flew 14 Young Eagles from the Boys & Girls Club of Alaska.
What a great time! Thank you each for setting aside hours of your day, yesterday, to put smiles on 14 faces and "crazy notions of flying" in 14 heads! What a beautiful thing.
Everyone got to see the Knik Glacier in flight.
Pilots were: Edwin White, Bernie Willis, Burke Wick and Rick Henry.
Ground assistants were: Scott McEwen, Charles Hosack, Klaus Markgraf, Tom Lawhorn, David Baldwin, Sandy and Tracey.

For our June meeting we will enjoy a BBQ at Bernie’s airstrip AK45 - "Grebe Lake". This is just 2 1/2 miles southwest of Wasilla airport and while not depicted on the sectional it does display when entered in ForeFlight.

Bernie's home has a nice airstrip, so we encourage members to fly in. He has a hangar with several planes and projects in it - all of this situated on a beautiful lake. This, however is not a sanctioned ‘Fly-in’ by the EAA.

From the Parks Highway Take Sylvan Rd. south at the intersection with Pittman Rd. (which goes north).
Airstrip information: Bernie's airstrip is "AK45", which depicts on ForeFlight but not on the sectional. The strip is 06-24, 2,200' x 50' turf. This is only 2 miles SW of Wasilla (PAWS), so watch for traffic in their pattern. If your airplane would require landing at Wasilla, call Bernie at: (907) 301-2666 and he will have someone pick you up there.

Bernie and Jeanette Willis hosted our Chapter’s BBQ and meeting at their beautiful home between their lake and airstrip. We met several new attendees and about a half dozen planes flew in for a perfect evening in a perfect setting.

EAA Chapter 42 working with the Alaska Airmens Association and the University of Alaska Anchorage flew 30 new Young Eagles today at Merrill Field.

It was a tremendous success thanks to our VP and Youth Activities Coordinator Scott McEwen and ground volunteers: Cliff Belleau, Sara Maurer, Paul Rupple, Al George, David Baldwin and James Bowers. The volunteer pilots were: Burke Wick, Al Clayton, Wes Erb, Kayti Beale and Rick Henry.

Ed White received the airworthiness certificate for his RV-4 from DAR Mark Barker today.
Congratulations Ed!! The many years of hard work has paid off!

Today Ed White flew his new RV-4 N907EW twice, logging 2.4 hours of flight test time at Birchwood airport. This was the culmination of 13 1/2 years of work.

On the second flight Bob Edison "chased" him in his RV to help validate some of his readings and supervise as Ed did full stalls. Stall speed was 46 knots and on the final approaches Ed used 65K (1.4 Vso) as his approach speed.

Rick Henry acted as ground support.

Bio: Lars Gleitsmann - As a lifelong Aviation enthusiast I always dreamed about building and flying. Since 1996 I am active in the EAA and flying in Alaska. Since 2007 I am the elected Government Affairs Officer of the Anchorage EAA-chapter42. My greatest motivation is to make flying and aircraft ownership available to more people. Even after flying 52 types of planes in 12 countries on 5 continents I still enjoy airplanes at least as much as on the first day. I am a part-owner in 7 airplanes & restorations. I own and operate Better Aircraft Fabric, providing Oratex product and support for North America.
